We Started Because T-Shirts Were Getting Boring

FunkAi began inside a marketing agency.

When generative tools first started entering the creative industry, we began experimenting with them during design projects. What started as curiosity gradually became a serious understanding of how ideas could be explored, directed and refined in completely new ways.

Then, while browsing one of India’s largest T-shirt websites, something became obvious.

The designs were getting boring.

Different brands. Different colours. But often the same familiar graphics, the same references and the same safe approach to streetwear.

During a conversation between friends, a simple question came up:

Why not make the kind of T-shirts we actually wanted to wear?

That question became FunkAi.

We started researching visual cultures that had always caught our attention—Japanese Ukiyo-e artwork, vintage film posters, Polaroid photography, mythology, street graphics, archival typography and the imperfect textures of older print media.

We did not want to place random artwork on blank T-shirts.

We wanted every design to feel like it belonged to a larger world.

Some ideas worked immediately. Most did not. Designs were built, rejected, rebuilt and refined repeatedly. The collection you see today took nearly a year to develop—not because it had to, but because we refused to release artwork we did not genuinely love ourselves.

The same obsession carried into the garment.

We travelled through Bhiwandi, met suppliers, tested fabrics, compared fits and kept looking for a T-shirt that could carry the scale of our artwork properly. We are still improving, still testing and still searching for better ways to make every piece.

Because the print is not an afterthought.

At FunkAi, the back of the T-shirt is the canvas. Our artwork is intentionally large, detailed and impossible to miss. We do not shrink designs simply because smaller prints are easier or cheaper to produce.

AI may help us explore possibilities, but it does not replace taste, research or human judgement. Every piece is selected, directed, reworked and developed until it feels like FunkAi.

We are not here to produce endless designs.

We are here to create the few that deserve to exist.

Large prints. Heavyweight fabric. Original visual stories. No shortcuts.

This is FunkAi.
